70th Anniversary of Tai Fung Bank

Tai Fung Bank, formerly known as “Tai Fung Money Changer”, was founded by Mr. Ho Yin and others in 1942 and has had a glorious presence here in Macao for 70 years. With the enactment of the Banking Law of Macao in 1971, “Tai Ring Money Changer” became the first locally incorporated commercial bank in Macao. To cope with the rapid social and economic development of Macao in the 1980s, the bank invited Bank of China to participate in its shareholding in 1984 with the objective of further expanding and strengthening its competitiveness. Thereafter, the bank increased its capital for several times and by now it is the local bank with the biggest registered capital.

In the meantime, Mr. Ho Yin advocated and pioneered lhe establishment of “The Macau Association of Banks’ to aim for a gradual but healthy development of the local banking industry. Tai Fung Bank was then elected as the chairman of the Association for the first and the subsequent five terms of office. In the 1990s, Tai Fung Bank had already written a new chapter in the history of its development through expansion of its business and provision of quality services to the local people.

Having been operating in Macao for 70 years, Tai Fung Bank not only witnessed the history of the Macao society but also grew up together with her people. In the late l990s, the bank moved its headquarters from “Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro” to “Alameda Dr. Carlos d’Assumpçâo” and currently Tai Fung Bank has a branch network that covers the entire Macao and her islands, thus enabling the bank to better serve the development of the majority of both Macao’s commercial and industrial sectors as well as the well being of the local people. To uphold its market oriented business philosophy that centers on the needs of customers, the bank provides innovated services such as i-Banking, credit cards and investment tools well supported by advanced information technology in addition to traditional products such as deposits, loans and brokerages.

The bank will continue to provide a myriad of diversified services to its customers to be in line with lhe needs of the environmental evolution.

Looking forward to the future, Tai Fuing Bank will firmly stick to the belief of “Trust. Innovation and Excellence” and will seize the opportunity of the unprecedented development resulting from the support pledged by the central government, from the orientation given by the Macao SAR government, from the ever growing cooperation of the Pearl River Delta regions and from the launch of the development of the Hengqin area to firmly implant its root in Macao on one hand and to seek expansion in Greater China on the other.

About the “Five Dragons”

There are two kinds of theories about the attributes of the Five Elements in each year: one saying is dependent on the “Heavenly Stems” while the other is based on the sound retainers of the Five Elements, which are calculated by “Heavenly Stems” and the “Earthly Branches”.

If calculated by “Heavenly Steins”, the dragon’s nature for the Five Elements is as follows:

“Water Dragon”: Renchen Year (Ren belongs to Water) 2012, 1952
“Metal Dragon”: Gengchen Year (Geng belongs to Metal) 2000, 1940
“Earth Dragon”: Wuchen Year (Wu belongs to Earth) 1988, 1928
“Fire Dragon”: Bingchen Year (Bing belongs to Fire) 1976. 1916
“Wood Dragon”: Jiachen Year (Jia belongs to Wood) 1964. 1904

If based on the sound retainers of the Five Elements, the dragon’s nature for the Five Elements and their mnemonics are as follows:

“Water Dragon”: Renchen Year (Rendsen - running water) 2012, 1952
“Metal Dragon”: Gengchen Year (Gengchen - wax metal) 2000, 1940
“Wood Dragon”: Wuchen Year (Wuchen - forest wood) 1988, 1928
“Earth Dragon”: Bingchen Year (Bingchen - earth in sand) 1976, 1916
“Fire Dragon”: Jiachen Year (Jiachen - fire of buddha) 1964, 1904

The Macao Post adopted the “Heavenly Stems” calculation method lo figure out the nature of the “Five Elements” in the fifth issue of the third series of Chinese Zodiac stamps “Lunar Year of the Dragon”.
