ORBIS – 30 Years of Saving Sight

285 million people in the world are visually impaired; one more child goes blind every minute
ORBIS believes everyone has the “right to sight” ORBIS envisions nobody In this world will be unnecessarily blind!

Since the inaugural flight to Panama in 1982, the ORBIS Flying Eye hospital and the ORBIS team started their long journey to save sight worldwide. As a global nonprofit organization, ORBIS has worked in 89 countries to train eye care professional and restore sight. ORBIS is dedicated to prevent and treat blindness through hands-on training, capacity building for local healthcare partners, public health education and improved access to quality eye care, in an effort to empower local partners to reach a state where they can provide, on their own, quality eye care services that are affordable, accessible and sustainable.

According to the World health Organization, one child goes blind every minute.
Nevertheless, through prevention, proper treatment or surgical intervention, up to 80% of the visual impairment could be avoided. This is the vision that drives ORBIS, we believes everyone has the right to sight!

Over the past three decades, ORBIS had carried out more than 1.000 programs, enhanced the skills of more than 288,000 eye health care personnel and provided quality eye care treatment to over 15 million people. Unfortunately, there are still over 39 million sightless people living in total darkness, waiting for our help.
In tribute to the 30th anniversary of ORBIS’ sight-saving work, Macao Post and ORBIS joined hands to release an issue of commemorative stamps with the theme “ORBlS - 30 Years of Saving Sight”, aiming to raise public awareness on the global blindness problem, the hardship suffered by the visually impaired and the importance of healthy eye-sight.

Harmonized with the theme of “30 Years of Saving Sight”, the principal concept of the two stamps highlighted the core values of ORBIS’ mission:

. The world’s only Flying Eye hospital is literally a teaching hospital with wings that brings together dedicated eye care professionals and aviators to give the gift of sight to developing countries around the world:

. Over 500 Volunteer Faculty worked tirelessly over the past 30 years to leave a lasting legacy by training medical professionals in poor nations to treat and teach quality eye care in their own communities:

. Blindness can trap a family and an entire community in a cycle of poverty as lack of sight limits independence: by restoring a person’s vision means benefiting the whole family and the society at large.

. Identifying eye care needs through sight screening activities in remote and underserved areas is always a major component of ORBIS’ mission: prevention is always more cost-effective than treatment in the fight against blindness.

While sharing our 30-year achievements with supporters through the issuance of the commemorative stamps, ORBIS would like to ride on this campaign to cordially invite the Macao Community to also show their care for the sightless in other parts of the world. ORBlS gratefully acknowledges the long-term generous support of the Macao SAR Government and Macao Post, whose eontnbution to the stamp issuance is invaluable.

In the years ahead, ORBIS will continue to devote its greatest efforts in saving sight, serving as a catalyst for fostering community cooperation for the benefit of all mankind.

Henrique de Senna Fernandes (1923 — 2010)

Henrique de Senna Fernandes was a famous macanese writer and lawyer.

He was born on 15 October 1923, in one of the oldest macanese families, of Portuguese, goan and Chinese ancestry. The traditional Portuguese education he received at home gave him a sense of pride in his ancestry. He was raised in a reading atmosphere and was influenced in his youh by writers Aquilino Ribciro, Eça de Queirós, Jorge Amado and Camilo Castelo Branco, which helped grow in him a passion for writing.

He studied Law at Coimbra University in Portugal. He practised law in Macao, although his true passions were teaching and writing. 11e was a teacher and principal at Pedro Nolasco Commercial School and he still remembered today with tenderness by his former students. He was president of the Association of Educational Promotion of Macau, when the Macau Portuguese School was created, and also director of the Macau National library and, as a lawyer, President of the Macau Lawyers Association from 1991 to 1995.

He was elected Portuguese Corresponding Member of the Sciences Academy of Lisbon in 2003 and received honorary doctorates in Literature from the Macau Inter-University Institute (currently University of Saint Joseph) in 2006 and from the University of Macau in 2008. He was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator in 1986, the Medal of Cultural Merit and the Medal of Valor by the Macao Government in 1989 and 1995 respectively, and the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Saint James of the Sword in 1998. In 2001, he was also awarded the Medal cultural Merit by the Macao SAR Government, but the award he was most fond of was that of Citizen Emeritus awarded by the Leal Senado in 1999.

He has four published books “Nam Van Stories of Macau”, “Love and Tiny Tocs”, “The  Bewitching Braid” and “Mong-Ha” including him in an eventual lusophone literary canon and left three unfinished works “The Night Born in December”, “The Father of Orchids” and “The Sorrows”. Part of his work has been translated to Chinese by Yu Ilui Juan and to English by David Brookshaw. Novels “Love and Tiny Toes” and “The Bewitching Braid” have been adaped to cinema. The former by Portuguese director Luís Filipe Rocha and the latter by the Chinese producers and directors Kai Brothers.

His work evokes the atmosphere of the l930s. 1940s and 1950s in Macao, when the “christian city” and the “Chinese bazaar” followed parallel paths, each set with its own destiny, and is a unique testimony to a bygone way of being and living. He had a deep knowledge of Macao and in his work he registered the identity of a community, a faithful portrait of the Macao of that era, so as to, in his own words, leaves a heritage to coming generations of life in his time. In addition to “his” Macao, Senna Femandes’ literary work adopts love and women as principal themes. Women and love, often including a chinese woman and a macanese man, going against the traditional conventions of the time. The women he met helped him build his female characters, giving autobiographic traits to his short stories and novels. He used love stories to paint the social differences and society’s prejudices that were characteristic in Macao then.

He assumed himself as a “writer of Macao”, of Portuguese ancestry, and had the sole purpose of telling a good story, regardless of style or literary movements.

Henrique de Senna Fernandes was above all a full-blooded Macao Citizen, observing, participating and ever present and he used lo say that “Portugal is my fatherland and Macao is my motherland”.

Macao Seen by Lok Cheong

Lok Cheong (1923-2006), the former president of the Macau Artist Society, who staled his career as a self-taught painter in theater. He was proficient in western painting, and then became expert in traditional Chinese painting later.

As a native in Macao, the works of Lok Clwong was fully brimming with local flavor. In his eyes, Macao is serenity and vital. His painting surpasses the conventional thinking, always blends in the local folk custom. In the early years, his artworks were usually selected in the art exhibitions in Guangdong Province.
Especially, “Gravel road”, an aquarelle with strong feature of Macao, had earned him a special award of the 6 national art exhibitions in 1985.

When National Day during 1960’s and 1970’s, the decorated archway standing erect around Macao, became colorful and shining, and show off the strength of national construction and culture. Especially the Largo do Senado and the Tiananmen Rostrum with grand style and glorious design, has become the gathering place for tourist. In those days, the decorated archway had become the characteristic of Macao, and was the indelible collective memory of such generation in Macao.

Lok Cheong as the coordinator of the design of the decorated archway for the National Day of China in Macao, leaded a production team and friends to develop for several years with innovation and unique style, finally got a great achievement. It happened one year, the decorated archway collapsed on the eve of National Day due to typhoon. Lok Cheong and his team spared no effort to make it rebuild again over one night, and renewed vitality, which was a much-told story at that time. Today many local painting leaders were steeped in the decorated archway.

A well-known saying by Zeng Gongliang, in Song dynasty, was that: “To enjoy the surprising scenery of the billows like giant silver mounts, you should push your windows open and take a broad view of the great river. (It means that to evolve into great achievements, one should take the initiative attitude to step out into the world, to make progress, to find good things in the world and learn from others.) Lok Cheong regards it as a model. As Macao is just a tiny place, the development of art of painting should be connected with outside. Lok Cheong and colleagues of Macau Artist Society initiated contact with the painting friends or peer all over China, and promoting the flow of painting talent in the name of art of painting. Its aim is showing prosperous and beautiful Macao. It always keeps learning from each other all over China, and making mutual progress and development of painting art.
